Turbocharged 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS Pushes Performance

Unique exterior and interior styling, sport-tuned suspension and standard MyLink Oshawa, Ontario (December 19, 2011) – A hotter Chevrolet Sonic is about to sound off – the 2013 Sonic RS. It goes on sale in late 2012, after making its public debut at the North American International Auto Show Jan. 14-22.

The new RS amplifies the Sonic’s youthful style and driving experience with unique exterior and interior features matched with a 138-horsepower (103 kW) Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine. Sonic is the only vehicle in its segment to offer a turbocharged powertrain.
“The new Chevrolet Sonic RS pushes Chevrolet’s performance heritage in a new direction, for a new generation of drivers,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Global Chevrolet Marketing. “It takes the Sonic’s great design and latest connectivity features and combines them with a more performance-oriented look and feel.”
The Sonic RS is offered exclusively in the five-door body style. Chevrolet’s exclusive MyLink infotainment system is standard. It offers the personalized connectivity of Stitcher Internet radio.
Sonic RS exterior features
  • New front fascia with new fog lamp design
  • New RS-specific grille
  • New rear fascia
  • New rear spoiler
  • New rocker mouldings
  • Unique mirror cap finish
  • Retuned sport exhaust with chrome outlet
  • Unique 17-inch five-spoke wheel design
  • Lowered and stiffened suspension with performance-tuned dampers
  • RS badging.
The more-aggressive look of the Sonic RS is inspired by the concept that debuted in Detroit in 2010. The Sonic RS will be available in Victory Red, Summit White, Cyber Gray Metallic and Black Granite Metallic, which is a new exterior colour for the 2013 Sonic.
“The Sonic RS remains true to the progressive spirit of the concept and brings an unmistakable attitude to the segment,” said John Mack, design director for the Sonic. “From every angle and every touch point, it is a car that is unabashed in its performance statement – and one that drives Chevrolet’s performance legacy into its second century.”
One of the most-dramatic cues from the concept carried into the production model is the Sonic RS’s front fascia, which has a deep air dam design that enhances the car’s road-hugging stance. Vertical intakes at the edges of the fascia reinforce the wide, low proportion and house the fog lamps.
Sonic RS interior features
  • New front sport seats
  • New sport steering wheel with thicker rim and racing-inspired flat-bottom design
  • New shifter knob (manual transmission)
  • New aluminum sport pedals
  • Specific instrument panel cluster graphics
  • RS-specific interior trim colour for the instrument panel and door trim inserts.
“Like the exterior, the Sonic RS’s interior looks and feels the part of a true performance car,” said Mack. “The seats are firm and provide great lateral support during quick cornering and the feel of the thick, flat-bottom steering wheel is a feature driving enthusiasts will truly appreciate.”
The Sonic RS’s interior is a connected environment, with the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment seven-inch colour touch screen radio. This system allows customers to bring customized music libraries into the vehicle and use their smart phones and Bluetooth connectivity to access Stitcher Internet radio. When the vehicle is stopped, users can project video and even personal photo albums onto the screen from their phone.
Sonic RS performance
The Sonic RS is powered by a standard Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine that is rated at 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) – and provides an immediate feeling of power that is sustained across the rpm band, for a greater feeling of performance at lower rpm. It’s matched with a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic.
Unique gear ratios for the six-speed manual transmission and unique final drive ratio for the automatic give the Sonic RS a sportier feel than non-RS models.
Complementing the segment-exclusive turbocharged powertrain is MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, and a semi-independent, torsion beam axle-mount compound link-type rear suspension – featuring a robust, tubular V-shape beam – with gas-charged shocks. The front and rear tracks are identical at 59.4 inches (1,509 mm), for well-planted stability and balance.
The new RS is the only Sonic model offered with four-wheel disc brakes, which are partnered with a four-channel anti-lock braking system. The four-sensor system – one at each wheel – incorporates electronic brake force distribution, which balances braking performance based on such factors as road conditions and the weight of passengers and/or cargo.
Electric power steering is standard and features a wear compensator that continually adjusts the system interaction with the steering gear to ensure precise steering action over the life of the system.
Sonic lineup at a glance
The Chevrolet Sonic is offered in two body styles: a four-door sedan and a five-door, with a starting price of $14,495. Each body style delivers class-leading, rear-seat roominess and cargo space. Vehicle highlights include:
  • Standard Ecotec 1.8L engine paired with five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions
  • Standard electric power steering and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing
  • Sedan offers trunk capacity that is greater than most compact cars; hatchback and sedan offer better rear-seat roominess than Ford Fiesta. With a rear seat that folds nearly flat, the Sonic hatchback has greater cargo capacity than Fiesta

Cadillac XTS production to start at Oshawa in early 2012

Cadillac has just announced some good news for us Canadians today. Mark Reuss, the American President of GM, announced that Cadillac’s two newest members of the family, the ATS and the XTS will be built at their Oshawa Ontario plant. It’s expected that the new models will increase production and create around 400 new jobs. GM plans on investing $117 million into the Oshawa plant. Currently the plant makes the Chevy Equinox, Imapala and Camaro.
The XTS is going to be a replacement for both the aging DTS full size sedan and the much forgotten STS sedan. It is expected to look fairly similar to the concept XTS pictured above. The XTS will likely take on the likes of the Audi A8, BMW 7-series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Hyundai Equus.
The ATS, on the other hand, is promised to be of a more nimble sporting nature as Cadillac has stated that its direct competition will be the BMW 3-series. Even if, by the time it becomes for sale, it will have been built to compete with a previous generation 3-series. Still, considering how good the current 3-series is, it’s likely that the ATS won’t disappoint. (General Motors Aug-2011)

Hold That Hill: 2012 Chevy Sonic Lends "Extra Foot"

Hill-Hold technology frees drivers to let go of brake

MILFORD, Mich. – We’ve all needed an extra hand at one time or another – but what about an extra foot?  The 2012 Chevy Sonic offers just that – an “extra foot” with standard hill-hold technology on all manual transmission models that can help novice and veteran stick drivers better manage hills.
Typically, car manufacturers introduce cutting edge technology and new features in luxury models and gradually filter them down to mainstream vehicles. However, Chevy is introducing hill-hold technology in the all-new Sonic, a sub-compact car starting at $14,495 including a $760 destination charge.
Hill-hold technology makes navigating hilly terrain with a manual as effortless as an automatic, allowing drivers to get started without rolling backward or forward.
In a Sonic equipped with hill-hold, a pitch sensor detects the tilt of the body when the car is stopped on a slope and sends a signal to the stability control system.  This triggers the electronically controlled brake hardware to keep the wheels clamped for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal.
“It will retain the braking force that the driver applied with the chassis control system and hold the vehicle in place” said John Buttermore, lead development engineer for the Sonic. “That’s long enough for the driver to safely apply the accelerator and let out the clutch for a smooth start, always heading in the right direction.”
Hill-hold is like giving Sonic drivers a third foot, enhancing both the safety and the convenience of driving in hilly terrain. YouTube Video of Lead development engineer John Buttermore explains the hill hold technology in the 2012 Chevy Sonic.

Sonic & Top Safety Pick From IIHS

DETROIT – The all-new 2012 Chevy Sonic, which has two more air bags than its subcompact competitors, is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.
The Sonic achieved “good” scores in all four types of tests performed, including frontal offset and side impact. It also has standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, which the institute requires of all vehicles receiving a Top Safety Pick designation.
The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and in simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries.
"Only vehicles that perform with the highest level of safety in their class earn the Institute's top accolade," said IIHS President Adrian Lund.
In addition to 10 air bags, the Sonic offers a body structure incorporating a single welded side ring unit. More than 60 percent of the vehicle safety cage consists of high-strength steel.
“We developed Sonic to exceed our customers' expectations of the subcompact market, both in the fun-to-drive performance characteristics and the segment-leading safety features,” said Joaquin Nuño-Whelan, Sonic vehicle line director and vehicle chief engineer. “This designation by IIHS confirms that Chevy customers can buy a subcompact with top safety performance.”
Other Sonic safety features include LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Top tethers for Children);six months of complimentary OnStar Directions and Connections service, including stolen vehicle assistance and automatic crash response, and power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes with panic brake assist technology.
Sensors that control the deployment of 10 standard airbags are mounted into Sonic’s structure. The sensing and diagnostic module receives data from the car's sensors and establishes the severity of the impact and whether to deploy the airbags. The additional driver and passenger knee airbags can help reduce injury to lower extremities.
Another standard feature is Sonic’s hill-hold technology, which makes navigating hilly terrain with a manual as effortless as automatic. It’s a luxury-level feature that helps drivers maintain braking control on hills.
With this rating, the Sonic joins the Chevrolet Volt and the Chevrolet Cruze, two other small cars that recently received a 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick.

eASSIST model added to OSHAWA-BUILT Buick Regal Line-up

As the Oshawa Assembly Plant prepares to begin production of Buick Regal models for the North American market next month, its mission just became a lot greener, thanks to Buick’s announcement of the new 2012 Regal eAssist™ available beginning this Fall. The Regal eAssist™ model made its debut today at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.
The eAssist™ system improves fuel efficiency by up to 24 percent over the Regal’s four-cylinder/six-speed powertrain, delivering estimated fuel consumption of just 8.0 L/100km city and 5.4 L/100km on the highway*. Its fuel consumption beats out competitors such as the Acura TSX, rated at 9.3 L/100km city and 6.2 L/100km highway.  The Regal eAssist’s estimated 5.4 L/100km on the highway is 13 percent better than the TSX, which doesn’t offer a six-speed automatic transmission, all standard on the Buick.
“The award-winning Buick Regal is proof of this company’s capabilities on the car side of the business, and the addition of the Regal with eAssist shows just how serious we are about offering consumers a range of sophisticated powertrain options from green to mean,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. “Integrating such advanced fuel-saving technology into our Oshawa Assembly Plant is a natural fit given the plant’s flexible manufacturing system and its longstanding quality leadership, and we’re proud to lead the way in terms of green technology production in Canada.”
Regal joins the 2012 LaCrosse as the second Buick to feature the fuel-saving technology. The eAssist system is comprised of a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery and electric motor-generator that provide electrification to deliver regenerative braking, engine stop/start and electric boost capability. eAssist delivers hybrid-like fuel efficiency, but also excellent ride quality, handling performance and interior quietness, while costing thousands less than competitors with similar technologies.
“With the eAssist system, customers don’t have to trade a premium driving experience for efficiency,” added Williams. “We believe Regal and LaCrosse with eAssist provide more logical and affordable choices, compared to other hybrid midsize and full-size luxury sedans.”
Regal with eAssist goes on sale this fall. It joins an expanding lineup that also includes 2.4L and 2.0L Turbo (with manual transmission) models, as well as the upcoming Regal GS. Regal with eAssist offers the range of luxury and convenience packages offered in the other models, along with unique features that include:
  • Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and tires with lower rolling resistance
  • A driver-selectable, fuel economy-optimizing mode for the air conditioning system, which enables more frequent and longer-duration engine stop periods
  • An ECO gauge on the instrument panel that continuously responds to driving behavior, enabling the driver to drive with greater efficiency
  • A powerflow readout in the 7-inch infotainment screen, which shows the flow of energy through the electric assist system, such as battery charging from regeneration and electric power directed to the engine.

eAssist details
Mated to Regal’s 2.4L Ecotec direct injection four-cylinder engine and next-generation six-speed automatic transmission, the eAssist system uses power stored in the battery to provide needed electrical boost in various driving scenarios, optimizing engine and transmission operation. An advanced 115V lithium-ion battery and latest-generation 15-kW induction motor-generator unit help increase fuel economy through:
  • Regenerative braking, which provides up to 15 kW of electricity to charge the battery
  • Providing up to 11 kW (15 hp) of electric power assistance during acceleration
  • Automatic engine shut-off when the vehicle is stopped
  • Aggressive fuel cut-off during deceleration down to zero vehicle speed, enabled by the torque smoothing provided by the induction motor-generator unit
  • Intelligent charge/discharge of the high-voltage battery.
“The capability to deliver electric boost to the powertrain system during heavy acceleration and grade driving enables the engine and transmission to operate more efficiently,” said Steve Poulos, global chief engineer of the eAssist system. “Full fuel shutoff at stops and during deceleration complements electric boost and regenerative braking with additional fuel savings.”
Regal with eAssist technology also features improved underbody aerodynamics and tires optimized for performance and fuel economy. It also features a hill-assist system that captures brake pressure to help the driver more comfortably accelerate from a stop on a moderate or steep grade. It does this by greatly reducing the tendency of the vehicle to roll backward with the engine in shut-down mode.
The eAssist system’s 115V air-cooled lithium-ion battery bolsters the 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine with approximately 11 kW (15 hp) of electric power assist during heavy acceleration and 15 kW of regenerative braking power. The system also enables the Ecotec engine to shut down fuel delivery in certain deceleration conditions, which saves additional fuel. While in fuel shut-off mode, the induction motor-generator unit continues spinning along with the engine to provide immediate and smooth take-off power when the driver presses on the accelerator. Then, as the vehicle comes to a stop, the induction motor-generator unit spins the engine, bringing it to a smooth stop – properly positioned for a smooth restart.
“The battery system is designed to provide power assistance to the internal combustion engine, rather than store energy for all-electric propulsion,” said Poulos. “It’s really an extension of the conventional internal combustion engine, not a replacement for it.”
The eAssist power pack contains the lithium-ion battery pack, the integrated power inverter and 12V power supply. It is located in a compartment between the rear seat and trunk; and it is surprisingly compact and lightweight, weighing only about 29 kilograms (65 pounds). Trunk space is slightly reduced when compared with 2011 models with the four-cylinder/six-speed powertrain, but still offers 314 liters (11.1 cubic feet) of storage. A quiet electric fan cools the power pack, drawing air from a vent located in the package tray, behind the rear seat. The eAssist system’s electric induction motor-generator is mounted to the engine in place of the alternator to provide both motor assist and electric-generating functions through a unique engine belt-drive system. The induction motor-generator is a high-performance, compact induction motor that is liquid-cooled for increased performance and efficiency. Information Provided By GM Canada Communications

Cadillac Continues Development of All-New ATS

Handpicked engineers tasked to create agile sport sedan:

Oshawa, Ontario (November 30, 2011) – It’s a given that the luxury cars contain high technology, but the finest must have something that cannot appear on the specification chart: expertise. Engineers working on the all-new Cadillac ATS, which begins production in 2012, were handpicked based on their roles in developing other top Cadillacs – and how well they can drive and evaluate cars on grueling test tracks.
Their shared goal: Create a new compact sport sedan challenging the best cars in that category. Most of the engineers on the team also developed Cadillac’s CTS and V-Series high-performance models, and have the highest level of training as test drivers. Some are certified drivers on Germany’s famed Nurburgring test track.
“It's been the persistent attention to detail in noise-vibration-harshness, the gram-by-gram mass reduction, and consistent focus on ‘fun to drive’ attributes that led this team to hone the suspension and steering in the demanding environments of the German Autobahn and Nurburgring Nordschleife,” said ATS lead development engineer Chris Berube.
The ATS will be unveiled in 2012 and will be built at the Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Mich., alongside the CTS Coupe, Sedan and Sport Wagon family.
A series of videos featuring highlights of the car’s development are available on the Cadillac YouTubepage and on the Cadillac media website.
